How to Navigate Your Building Dashboard!

The Building Dashboard is your source for real timedata on resource consumption in dorms and houses on campus.

Using the Dashboard

The primary navigation buttons along the bottom will allow you to look at consumption data from different sources or to focus on different aspects of consumption. The "Dorms" button will take you to a kW consumption versus time graph that plots the minimum and maximum consumption along with the selected dormitory. The "Union St." and "Dorm Floors" buttons will take you to a similar page, but with Union Street houses or specific dormitory floors instead of entire dorms. The "Dorm Comparison" button shows all of the dorms and their electricity consumption. The "Competition" button shows all of the dorms and their rankings in the dorm energy competition.

The secondary navigationbuttons are right above the primary navigation buttons. These allow you to select the period of time that is being graphed as well as which building is being plotted (for the Dorms and Union Street graphs). These buttons also may allow you to look at the data differently depending upon which page you are viewing. For example, the Dorm Comparison page allows you to change the units from kilowatt-hours of electricity to pounds of carbon dioxide, or grams of sulfur.

Dorms, Dorm Floors, and Union St.

The Dorms, Dorm Floors, and Union Street pages plot electricityconsumption versus time on the main graph and have gauges on the right hand side that show additional comparison information. On the graph the minimum and maximum per person consumption is always graphed, as well as the selected building. From this comparison it is easy to see where a particular building may have unusually high or low electricity usage, as well as showing patterns in electricity consumption throughout the course of a day, week, month, or year. The top two gauges on these pages show the electricity consumption of the selected dorm compared to the median (average) consumption of all the other dorms at the point of your cursor on the graph. The bottom-left gauge is a different comparison of the selected dorm versus the minimum and maximum of dorm consumption. The bottom-right gauge shows the date, time, and daylight on the area at the point of your cursor on the graph. This is useful for looking at how consumption may change at different times of the day or when it is light out compared to when it is dark.

Dorm Comparison

The Dorm Comparison page shows the usage (or emissions) in the past selected time period for each of the monitored dorms on campus, as well as the total usage (or emissions) of all of the monitored dorms on the left side of the page. The secondary button "Unit equivalent" allows you to change the units of resource usage to electricity consumption carbon dioxide emissions, etc. There is also the option of looking at the electricity consumption by floors instead of by the entire dorms by selecting "Electricity by Floors" under the comparisons tab next to the bar graph. You can also click on the colored bar for each dorm to get more information about it's resource usage.

Competition

The Competition page lists all the dorms by their ranking in the current dorm energy competition, with the best performing dorm at the top. Clicking on the colored bars for each dorm will give more detailed information on the dorm's performance. The secondary navigation buttons in the Competition page allow you to sort the rankings by percent reduction, total reduction, and the daily low. In the unit equivalent button you can select different units of savings, such as kilowatts, coal, and sulfur.
