This past weekend, Oberlin College hosted the 2009 Midstates Conference for Undergraduate Research in Computer Science and Mathematics (MCURCSM). Over 40 students and faculty from 12 colleges and universities gathered to hear students make presentations about their research accomplishments this past summer. 2009 Oberlin ACM contest teams
The Oberlin Computer Science programming teams had another successful trip to the ACM Programming Contest on Saturday, October 30th.
Four teams of three students competed in the contest: O(bees) (Michael Brooks, Michael Stevenson, Siyang Wu), O-nage (Katie Kuksenok, Ted Warner, Zach Levine), Oberlin Oriented Programmers (Kiron Roy, Emma Conner, Nathan Brown), and Foo Of Oberlin (Thomas Ramfjord, Brendan Chambers, Madhav Kaushish).
O(bees) and O-nage solved 3 problems and Oberlin Oriented Programmers and Foo Of Oberlin solved 2 problems. Overall among 113 teams, they placed 17th, 22nd, 34th, and 44th, respectively. In addition, O(bees) and O-nage ranked 2nd and 4th among the 43 teams participating at the Youngstown State location. Both of those teams were recognized at the post-contest banquet and won backpacks.

Our 25th Anniversary Symposium will be held April 23-25, 2010. We’re inviting all our CS alumni and other interested folks to join us. You’ll have a chance to meet with the current faculty and students and catch up with your old friends.
All events will take place on the Oberlin College campus. More details to follow.

To celebrate our 25th anniversary, the Department is establishing an endowed fund to support Oberlin student / faculty research, and to fund visits by outside speakers to campus.
We are seeking to raise $50,000 by the time of our 25th Anniversary Symposium and Celebration next April.

Modeling Across The Curriculum
Tony Starfield has earned a reputation as the best modeling instructor in the world. Starfield constantly refines group activities that one student describes as “partly fun mind-benders and partly challenging real-world conservation scenarios.” Starfield’s illustrious career has included hands-on contributions to engineering, applied mathematics, and biological modeling, and he brings those experiences to the classroom. Tony Starfield will be the Fall Instructor for CSCI 190 – How to Model it and CSCI 390 Seminar in Modeling for the Natural and Social Sciences

Join us on Thursday, April 23rd to hear Antonio Garcia Castaneda (Oberlin Class of 2001) give a talk on “Everything you ever wanted to know about the games industry* … but had no one to ask.”
Antonio has worked in the video game industry for 8 years, most recently for Sony. He is currently a graduate student at the University of London.
Reception at 4:00pm in King 223, Talk follows at 4:30pm in King 221.

This past Saturday (March 28th), Oberlin Computer Science’s Team O(Bees) competed at the 2009 Carnegie Melon Invitational Programming Contest. Michael Brooks and Katie Kuksenok competed against almost 30 other teams from schools around the region. They successfully solved 7 out of the 8 problems and took second place in both the “doubles division” as well as 2nd in the overall contest.

On February 27-28, the 3rd Ohio Celebration of Women in Computing (OCWiC – pronounced “Oh-quick”) was held in the Mohican Resort and Conference Center. Thanks to a generous donation from Susanne Hambrusch (from Purdue University) the department was able to send 2 students to attend. As you can see below, Emma Anderson ’09 and Elara Willett ’10 had a great time.

OCWiC brings together women majoring in computer science and related fields together with women teaching or working in computing careers. It is an opportunity for the community to get to know each other, meet possible mentors, and encourage young women in computer science to complete their studies and explore possible career paths by meeting women leaders from business, industry, and academia.
